Public hospitals play a vital role in providing medical services to the poor and uninsured, serving as a health care safety net. However, their numbers in the US have been steadily decreasing as many are closing or converting to private hospitals. LA County is no exception to this national trend. In fact, MLK-Harbor Hospital was forced to close in August 2007 for financial reasons. What kind of impact do you think this trend has on the population, and more importantly, on our health care system?
